Welcome to episode 12 of this season, we’re going to continue our break from discussing the Sustainable Development Goals for another special day coming up. This Thursday is Stop Food Waste Day. For this episode I'm going to give you 3 things you can do to assist with this considering 33% of all food produced globally is lost or wasted every year.
Mint Green Challenge: Plan ahead and don’t over buy. This one is huge considering the average amount of food that is wasted by an American family. It is equivalent to losing $1,866 in spoiled food.
Plan out your meals to ensure you don’t have leftovers.
Make a list of what you need before you shop so you don’t go buying things you see in the moment that will make things go to ways
Use what is in your fridge
When you put in new leftovers or have new groceries, put those in the back and make sure to move the older food to the front to make sure you see it and eat it before it expires.
Shamrock Green Challenge: The freezer is your friend
Batch-cook and freeze excess
Label items with the date and use them in order
Freeze bread and other leftovers that are getting close to spoiling. When you unfreeze them they will still be good enough to eat.
Forest Green Challenge: Make your brain creative
Experiment with what you have in the fridge
Use leftovers bits of vegetables to make wholesome soups
Make Bubble and Squeak or colorful frittatas from leftovers, heck you can even use ChatGPT to give you recipes based on what food you have leftover/lying around.
That is it for this week, we’ll dig back into the Sustainable Development Goals next week. Until next time, be green and be seen.
